For Google, Social Networking Is Just One Chapter of the Book

With its valuations and the number of users going through the roof, Facebook is perceived by many as the company that might dethrone Google as the next Internet superpower. Google, however, doesn’t see Facebook as a direct threat, since social networking is just one part of Google’s overall strategy.
“The digital world is exploding and it has so many chapters — it has cloud computing, it has mobile, it does have social, it has searches, it has so many elements. (…) Yes, absolutely it will be part of our strategy, yes it will be embedded in many of our products. But at the same time remember it’s one chapter of an entire book”, said Google’s Chief financial officer Patrick Pichette to Australian public television on Sunday.
While that may be true, with Facebook’s recent foray into e-mail it’s getting obvious that Facebook is competing with Google on many fronts, not merely as a social network. The real question here is whether Facebook’s core product – social networking – is more powerful a foundation than Google’s core product – search.
Pichette also weighed in on the state of mobile and Google’s great success with Android. “Now that everybody has a smartphone everybody searches, so these few hundred engineers (who developed Android) have accelerated (a market that) would have taken 10 years to develop into a few years,” he said. Pichette also repeated Eric Schmidt’s claim that 200,000 new android handsets are being activated every day.
Finally, Pichette gave his thoughts on what drives Google as a company, delivering another quote that goes hand in hand with Google’s long-standing “don’t be evil” mantra. “The first driving principle of Google is in fact not money — the first driving principle of Google is understanding that the Internet is changing the world,” he said.

google to delete personal data

Google has agreed to delete all personal data collected by its Street View cars from unsecured wireless networks. Google sparked an international outrage last month after it admitted to collecting information from unsecured Wi-Fi networks as its vehicles roamed residential streets. Thecompany was accused of unlawfully harvesting data, including e-mails, passwords and website addresses, during the creation of its Street View maps.
British Information Commissioner Christopher Graham said Google will also introduce improved training measures on security awareness and data protection issues for all its employees worldwide, reports the Daily Mail.
Graham said: "I am very pleased to have a firm commitment from Google to work with my office to improve its handling of personal information.
"It is a significant achievement to have an undertaking from a major multinational corporation like Google Inc that extends to its global policies and not just its UK activities."
Alan Eustace, Google's senior vice president, signed an undertaking on behalf of Google Inc to put in place improved training measures on security awareness and data protection issues for all employees, the Information Commissioner's Office said.
The company will also require its engineers to maintain a privacy design document for every new project before it is launched and the personal data collected in Britain will be deleted.
The decision is a victory for privacy campaigners, who were furious that Google had refused to back down over claims that it had unlawfully accessed private data, albeit accidentally

Google calling for price

GOOGLE' S NEXT online break through might just end up ticking off the US Federal reserve . The search engine is working on a price index- it will rely on the enormous quantity-of shopping data available on its website to collate numbers. Google 's chief economist Hal Varian, the brain behind the venture , was care careful in calling it an alternative and not a replacement to the government consumer price index( cpi ). But google will have an edge as its data will be on daily basis, whereas, the CPI Numbers are collated by hand from shops and published monthly......

What is Google TV?

The exact form Google TV will take can be relatively difficult to determine given the currently hazy hardware details. However, we do know something about the intricacies of the Google TV software and how exactly it will change your television.
Google TV essentially integrates applications and the internet directly into your television. It brings basic elements such as search or web browsing and goes as far as combining both web and TV simultaneously.
The most important element of Google TV is its search bar. Essentially it brings together all the information, programs, internet, and media surrounding whatever you search for. So programs currently or soon to be shown will appear alongside imdb or Google search results as well as any media or recordings you might have. The search bar negates the need for a TV guide as well and helps to enrich any programs you might be interested in by offering related websites and other online info.
Internet connected applications will also form a central part of Google TV. Much of what can be found on the Android operating system will be translated across to Google TV. Applications like Twitter and Amazon will be the first to appear on the hardware with the Android market eventually arriving on the platform early next year. Google also plans to make use of both the iPhone and Android powered handsets to act as a remote for Google TV. Voice search will allow you to use your mobile handsets microphone for input, creating search results by simply speaking into your phone.
A full web browser is also included in the Google TV package, meaning much of your surfing can be done on the television. The browser is Flash Player 10.1 compatible so video websites or slideshows on Flickr will be viewable. Television programs can be viewed simultaneously as picture-in-picture whenever the browser or applications are run.
Similarly to Apple's AirTunes, any content or web pages you are viewing on your phone can be pushed to Google TV and shown on your television screen via 'Fling'.
YouTube also play a key part in Google TV. A service called YouTube Leanback allows you to create channels quickly and easily and then play content without pressing any buttons. It means that YouTube essentially becomes another television channel providing HD content permanently streaming from the site. Similarly, broadcast television can be formed into playlists, with recordings made directly from the Google TV search bar. A queue of programs can be formed out of all different elements of video on the web as well as television recordings and then watched at any time.
Finally Google has created a customisable home page for the Google TV which can contain anything from applications to television channels. It is the first thing you see when Google TV is turned on and enables you to get to personalised content very quickly.
Google recently announced partnerships with Napster, Vevo and Pandora, all of which will provide a large amount of content for Google TV. Amazon Video on Demand and Netflix are also involved with Google TV and should help to further bolster the amount of content already available through the web and tv.
Currently there is relatively little information in terms of Google TV hardware. Sony's Google TV remote did make an appearance on an American television show recently, with technology website Engadget running screen-grabs of it. Similarly the Logitech Revue, another piece of Google TV, has begun appearing online. Both feature full QWERTY keyboards and complex controls with which to interact with Google TV.
The Logitech Revue was formally unveiled at an event in San Francisco this week. It will be one of the first pieces of Google TV hardware available alongside offerings from Sony.
Google TV is currently set to launch in the US, but no announcements have been made towards dates for launch in the UK or outside of the states.

Google stays strong as Yahoo slips in search market

Computerworld - Google had a good month in September, with its search share gaining and rivals Yahoo and Microsoft Bing taking a hit.
Google, the dominant search leader, grabbed 72.15% of all U.S. searches in the four weeks ending Oct. 2, according to Hitwise, an online traffic monitor. That's up slightly from 71.59% in August.
Microsoft Bing, which is Google's biggest rival, didn't have such a great month in September, though.
Hitwise reported Friday that Bing-powered search sites handled 23.64% of U.S. searches for the month, with Yahoo grabbing 13.54% and Bing itself pulling in 10.10%. Bing-powered search sites are down 2% overall, while Yahoo is down 5%. Bing itself went up 2%.
Microsoft and Yahoo announced in August that Bing is fueling Yahoo search results in the U.S. and Canada. The search integration came more than a year after both companies announced they were joining forces to better take on Google -- since neither company had made any headway on its own.
The latest Hitwise report shows that Yahoo suffered after integration, while Bing saw only a small bump.
"It's a pretty small slip and only based on a month's worth of data," said Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group. "I'm sure that these aren't the results that Bing marketers are looking for... but the holiday season might be key for them. Search engines receive a real workout with all of the holiday shopping, travel planning and the like. It will be interesting to see how Bing fares over the next three months or so."

DISH TV Network partners with Logitech to offer Google TV

The DISH TV Network and Logitech has announced a new venture this week to offer the Logitech Revue with Google TV to subscribers of the DISH network in the United States. Google TV will be integrated with the programming of the TV network to provide users a seamless entertainment package.
The service would offer customers with search features from the Internet to DVR content and the Video On Demand service by DISH.
“We are excited about our exclusive partnership with Logitech to bring the rich entertainment capabilities of Google TV through Logitech to our customers,” said Ira Bahr, chief marketing officer of the DISH TV Network.
“We are delighted to be working with DISH Network to offer consumers what we believe is a transformational TV experience,” said Greg Rhine, VP and general manager of Logitech America.
The Logitech Revue with Google TV comes with a companion box and a keyboard for users that have an HDMI-ready television and set-top box.
It will be commercially available to both existing and future DISH TV Network clients by the end of this month.

B2B SEO is key to reaching prospective clients

Firms looking to reach local clients should consider boosting their B2B search engine optimization, as new research indicates many searchers start with broad keywords.

According to a new report from 15miles, which polled individuals looking for local companies, 45 percent of internet users don't have specific businesses in mind as they conduct internet searches. Instead, they start off with keyword queries to guide their browsing.

This means that if prospective clients are looking for a product or service, they are open to purchasing it from whichever sites appear first on the search engine. By leveraging B2B search engine optimization, firms stand a greater chance of reaching these potential partners, which could result in more sales and leads.
B2B firms looking to target mobile prospects may have better success using a variety of channels. The survey found that on-the-go Americans use a broader range of platforms, including search engines, business directories and social networks.
While clients may not have specific businesses in mind, they are often looking for specific products and services. A recent report from Performics indicates that 89 percent of internet users will modify their searches to find the products they are looking for, while another 89 percent would try their search on a different portal.

Search engine optimization (SEO) and cost-efficient marketing campaigns have allowed BBC to cut its annual marketing budget by more than £4 million, according to statistics from The Guardian.

BBC spent around £1.4m on digital display ads and more than £220,000 on paid search marketing last year.

With a £93 million budget last year, the news firm said that it spent minimal amounts for its online advertising.

BBC said that its main digital marketing campaign consists of SEO, Twitter feeds, and display marketing messages. These campaigns all hope to redirect users to their site.

The employment of the SEO campaign has allowed consumers of all ages to interact with the site. While working on a minimal budget, the SEO campaign has managed to maximize traffic numbers for BBC.

Less than 1 year until the Internet runs out of addresses

Less than 1 year until the Internet runs out of addresses

The Internet will run out of Internet addresses in about 1 year's time, as told by John Curran, president and CEO of the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN). The same thing was also stated recently by Vint Cerf, Google's Chief Internet Evangelist.
There's an explosion of data about to happen to the Web - thanks largely to sensor data, smart grids, RFID and other Internet of Things data. Other reasons include the increase in mobile devices connecting to the Internet and the annual growth in user-generated content on the Web.
Currently the Web largely uses IPv4, Internet Protocol version 4. Each IPv4 address is limited to a 32-bit number, which means there are a maximum of just over 4 billion unique addresses. IPv6 is the next generation Internet Protocol and uses a 128-bit address, so it supports a vastly larger number of unique addresses. Enough, in fact, to give every person on the planet over 4 billion addresses!

John Curran from ARIN, the non-profit responsible for managing the distribution of Internet addresses in the North American region, told ReadWriteWeb that of the approximately 4 billion IPv4 addresses available, all but 6% have already been allocated. Curran expects the final 6% to be allocated over the coming year.
This is largely an issue that ISP (Internet Service Providers) and telecoms carriers need to deal with. However content service providers, including large-scale Internet companies like Google and Facebook, also need to ensure that the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 takes place. Curran explained that a content company like Google (for example its YouTube operation) will need to work with its ISP to transport the content via IPv6 as well as IPv4.
This transition is happening "slowly," says Curran. But he warns that "deployment is where we're behind."
Google, Facebook & Others Making Good Progress
John Curran told  that large carriers like Verizon and Comcast have announced trial IPv6 activity. Curran also noted that new Internet of Things initiatives that use sensor networks, power grids, RFID and similar technologies, are being directed to use IPv6 and not IPv4.
There is also solid support from the big Internet companies. Curran said that Google has already put the majority of its services onto IPv6. Declaring its support for IPv6 on a special webpage, Google states that "IPv6 is essential to the continued health and openness of the Internet [and] will enable innovation and allow the Internet's continued growth."
In June, Google held a Google IPv6 Implementors Conference. At that event, Facebook announced that it had begun to use IPv6.
In his opening remarks to the conference, Google's Chief Internet Evangelist Vint Cerf urges ISPs to move to IPv6, so that a "black market" for Internet addresses won't occur.
Another Y2K.................
Critics view some of the push for IPv6 as Chicken Little 'the sky is falling' talk. Commented by ajbraun, a self-described technology leader at Sony Ericsson, via Twitter: "We should call this "IPv6: Y2K II." An obvious issue for 10 years, we will panic at the end and finally much ado about nothing."
Others see a technology called NAT (Network Address Translation) as a solution - it maps multiple addresses to a single IP address, thus reducing the amount of unique IP addresses required. However this is at best a temporary solution. Google argued back in 2008 that NAT and similar technologies "complicate the Internet's architecture, pose barriers to the development of new applications, and run contrary to network openness principles."
Whether or not there is Y2K-style fear mongering, the bottom line is that IPv6 is a much larger platform for the coming Internet of Things. So one way or another, the move will have to be made.

windows 7 key board shortcuts

Visit us: imediasolutions

One of my personal favorites among the new features that Windows 7 came with was the introduction of some awesome and long awaited keyboard shortcuts. I personally use them as much as I can to save time, and I recommend the practice of using keyboard shortcuts to others too.

This article talks about 15 really cool keyboards shortcuts that are specific to Windows 7. I can bet that you don’t know all of them. Check them out, some of them will surprise you for sure.

1. Ctrl+Shift+N to Create a New Folder

Creating a new folder in Windows explorer is something we all need to do on a frequent basis. And until now, there was no default shortcut key available for this task. But Windows 7 changed that.

You could now use Ctrl+Shift+N to quickly create a new folder in Windows or anywhere on your computer where a folder can be created.

2. Ctrl+Shift+Click to Open a Program As Administrator

There are many instances when just clicking on the icon of the application and opening it doesn’t solve your purpose. You need to right click on it and click on “Run as Administrator” so that you can make the required changes to the app.

In Windows 7, this can be done with a keyboard shortcut. You just need to point your mouse cursor on that program and then click on it while pressing Ctrl+Shift keys to open it as administrator.

3. Shift+Right-Click Enhances Send to Menu

The above screenshot shows the default send to menu that I get when I simply right click on a program.

Now, if I press the Shift key, and while having it pressed, I right click on the icon, I get an enhanced send to menu.

4. Shift+Right-Click on a Folder to Open Command Prompt

If you do Shift+right-click on a folder, you’ll find an option that says “Open command windows here.” If you love working with the command prompt, this option should come in handy.

5. Win+Space to Quickly Show Desktop

Remember our quick tip on hiding open windows in windows 7 ? Well, this is the keyboard shortcut version of that mouse cursor trick. Pressing the Win key and the space bar simultaneously shows you the desktop immediately.

6. Win+Up/Down/Left/Right for Moving the Active Window

If you intend to quickly move the active window to make space for other apps, you could do that by using the Win key and one of the arrow keys. Each arrow key would move the window in the direction it is meant to.

7. For Dual Monitors: Win+Shift+Left Arrow Key to Move Active Window to Left Monitor

If you are on a dual monitor setup using Windows 7 then you could press the Win+Shift+Left arrow key combination to move the active application window to the left monitor.

8. For Dual Monitors: Win+Shift+Right Arrow Key to Move Active Window to Right Monitor

Similarly, if you need to move the current window to the right monitor screen, just press Win+Shift+right arrow key.

9. Win+T to Get to Taskbar Items

You could use the key combination Win+T to toggle through the applications pinned on the taskbar in Windows 7.

10. Shift+Click on a Taskbar App to Open a New Instance of the App

Let’s say you’ve got a bunch of Chrome windows open. And you need to quickly open a new blank window of the browser. Here’s the way – point your cursor to the chrome icon on the taskbar, hit Shift and click on it. There you go!

11. Win+B to Move Focus to the System Tray

In a previous article, we talked about a technique to add more clocks to the default Windows clock in the system tray. Now, if you need to get there without using your mouse cursor, how’d you do that?

Answer – Win+B. That would move the focus on the system tray, and then you could use the arrow keys to cycle through the items, including the Windows clock.

12. Win+P for Quickly Connecting Your Laptop to a Projector

Windows 7 has a nifty projection menu feature which enables you to quickly connect your laptop to a projector or an extended monitor. Win+P is the keyboard shortcut for that purpose.

13. Win+1, Win+2..so on for Opening Taskbar Programs

Want to quickly open a program that’s pinned to your Windows 7 taskbar? You can press the Win key and the number corresponding to the location of the app on the taskbar.

14. Win+Pause helps you check System Properties

Need to take a quick look at what’s the processor model you are using, or may be check the device manager, or advanced system settings? You could use Win+pause key combination to open the system properties window.

15. Ctrl+Shift+Esc Can Quickly Windows Task Manager

I think this was in Vista too, I am not sure. But it’s a cool shortcut nevertheless. Just press the Ctrl key, Shift key and the ESC key simultaneously and you have the task manager pop up right in front!

So that was about the amazing Windows 7 keyboard shortcuts. I hope you find them useful. In fact, learn them if you are on Windows 7. That’s what I did and it has helped a great deal. If I’ve missed a cool shortcut, do share that in the comments.

Now, if you are on Windows XP, and would love to get some these shortcuts that are relevant to XP, we’ll have you covered tomorrow. We will tell you how you could get some of the above shortcuts working on XP. Stay tuned!

Reasons to Outsource Search Engine Optimization

Reasons to Outsource Search Engine Optimization

When it comes to search engine optimization, many people assume they can do it themselves. Organic search engine optimization doesn’t seem too hard at first glance, but there is far more to it than just adding a few keywords to your web copy. While it is possible to do a lot of SEO on your own, it isn’t necessarily in your best interests, nor those of your business. Wondering why you should consider outsourcing everything to do with search engine optimization? Here are a few great reasons.
1. Save time. It takes time to do everything yourself. When you are first starting your business, this might be the best way to go. However, as soon as possible, it’s a good idea to start outsourcing to make sure you are getting the most out of your search engine optimization. Your business needs you, but it’s usually best to focus on the areas that only you can do and have someone else take care of the rest. This ensures that you don’t neglect the vital areas of your business while learning a myriad of new skills.
2. Do it right the first time. There’s a learning curve to search engine optimization, as with many other things. You can literally spend months tweaking and learning more, changing things and then learning more and doing it all over again. There’s a lot to be said for letting someone else handle it and do it right the first try. Would you rather learn it yourself and get a gradual trickle of traffic, or have a professional work on your SEO campaign and get a steady flow of traffic to your site?
3. Get all the details taken care of. There are many, many facets of organic search engine optimization that you probably don’t know about. Professionals have studied everything and understand all the subtle nuances that need to be addressed. That means there are areas that the average person will miss, so it’s a good idea to have a pro take care of your SEO and ensure that all angles are taken care of, resulting in far more effective campaigns.
4. Put it on autopilot. When you hire a professional firm to take care of your organic search engine optimization, you are essentially putting this area of promotion on autopilot. That’s a good thing, since you will reap all the benefits, but don’t need to be constantly aware of every little thing. As long as you have a good search engine optimization company doing the work for you, you will be able to leave this area of promo to them and worry about other things instead.
 5. Save money. The budget is always a big issue in any business. By outsourcing your SEO, though, you can actually save money in many cases. Take a close look at how much your time is worth. If you do your own search engine optimization, you need to factor in all the time that you’ll need in order to learn the techniques and methods, then the amount of time it will take you to actually implement them. Compare this to the cost of having an SEO firm do it all for you in a fraction of the time and chances are you’ll see that it is well worth hiring someone else to take this area over for you. It is possible to learn organic search engine optimization yourself. Keep in mind, however, that it could be far more useful and efficient to hire an expert to take over this area of promotion for you. You’ll benefit by being able to focus on other areas of your business and letting the professionals handle all the details . . . getting the job done right.
