Almost a quarter of 553 people surveyed in FINS' Sign or Decline question forum said they would consent to getting a tattoo of the company logo for their dream job.

While it comes as no surprise that some job hunters are willing to go the extra mile, employee loyalty has been declining over the years.

In MetLife's 9th annual Employee Benefits Trends survey, released last August, researchers found that 47% of employees felt very strong loyalty to their employer in 2009, compared to 59% in 2008.

"Over the last three years, employers have been doing more layoffs and furloughs, and employees still at the company are left picking up the workload," said Kathy Jacoby, assistant vice president of marketing at MetLife U.S. Business. Businesses cutting back have lowered bonuses, 401k matches, reduced raises and laid off staff. That's left many workers feeling overworked and underappreciated.

Employers are in denial about the decline in morale. The MetLife survey found that 51% of employers believe their staff is happy and satisfied, a number virtually unchanged since 2008. Employers "see relatively no change in employee loyalty," said Jacoby. "They think their employees are just happy to have a job."

Why is loyalty so important? It comes down to retention, said Jacoby. MetLife's survey found that one in three hoped to work for another company within the next 12 months.

"People are looking for employment elsewhere, which presents a competitive disadvantage for employers," said Jacoby. "Employees across all generations really do value workplace

Computerworld - In another shot at their common rival Google, Microsoft and Facebook are teaming up again to make Bing's search engine more social.

On Monday, Microsoft announced that it's working more Facebook information into Bing's search results, giving users a deeper look into their "friends" likes and dislikes.

This isn't the first time that Microsoft and Facebook have worked together to make search more social. Rather, it's an extension of those original efforts.

Before, Bing let users know if their Facebook friends had "liked" any of the search results they were seeing. Now Microsoft is giving a greater preference to "liked" search results in Bing's results ranking.

The search engine also is calculating how many people in general "like" certain search results, so it won't all be based on the user's friends. That's designed to give people a broader opinion base to help them make their decision.

Now Bing also will let users share their search results with their Facebook friends so they can enable their friends to vote on their favorites.

Analysts said these are good features for users who want to know what their friends, and even strangers, think about what car they should buy or where they should go on vacation.

However,it is also another way that Microsoft and Facebook can team up ( ) to go after Google, with its dominant search engine.

"Well it makes sense for Microsoft and Facebook to try to surround Google," said Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research. "Right now, they're not competing intensely with each other, but they're both competing fiercely with Google. Of course, they would do this."

And the competition between Google and Microsoft and now increasingly Google and Facebook is intensifying.

Last week, Facebook was caught hiring a prominent PR firm to try to get news media sites to publish negative stories about Google's privacy practices.

Last fall, the battle lines were made clear. That's when Microsoft tightened its ties with Facebook, and the two companies joined forces to bring social features to search. It was a move that represented a big threat to Google's search standing.

Alone, neither Microsoft nor Facebook was expected to be able to take on Google with its massive coffers and dominant market position. But together, the two companies have a better chance of at least slowly chipping away at Google's search dominance.

"It makes sense. Enemy of my enemy... and all that," said Gottheil. "But I'm skeptical about this joint venture being the giant killer. I think it's more about chipping away at Google. I'm sure there are people at both companies thinking about ways they can work together to drain customers away from Google."

As of March 31, Google listed $3.2 billion in short-term debt, which consisted mostly of commercial paper.

The Internet search leader sold the notes in three-, five- and 10-year pieces: $1 billion carrying an interest rate of 1.25 percent and coming due in 2014; $1 billion at an interest rate of 2.125 percent and a 2016 maturity; and $1 billion at an interest rate of 3.625 percent that comes due in 2021.

Standard & Poor's rated the debt at 'AA-', which is four notches below the top triple-A rating.

Mountain View-based Google ended March with $36.7 billion in cash. The company has been putting more cash to use, making the commitment to hire at least 6,200 workers this year, the most in its 13-year history. Google also keeps a big chunk of its cash, nearly $17 billion, in overseas accounts to avoid paying U.S. taxes.

The company gave all its workers a 10 percent raise at the beginning of the year and then went on a hiring splurge. More than half of the new staff is working on products and services to supplement the search advertising network, which makes most of Google's money.

The new growth opportunities include video ads on Google's YouTube site, ads on smartphones, and more banner advertising to lessen the company's dependence on text ads that appear alongside search results and other Web content. The company also is spending more to promote its Web browser, Chrome.

ith the rise of front-facing cameras on smartphones, the need for a good video chat app has increased, too. FaceTime and Skype 3.0 (Free, 4 stars) are currently the best in show, but they are only available for iOS devices. Android users have Fring (Free, 2.5 stars), Qik Video Connect(Free, 2.5 stars), and Tango (Free, 2.5 stars), and, while each app has interesting, innovative features, each also has one thing in common: poor video chat performance. Google has set out to rectify this with the addition of video chat to Google Talk, which will ultimately add a native, built-in video chat app to all Android devices. It's a step in the right direction, but it feels incomplete. The video quality is good, but performance is spotty. And Google needs to get this app into the Android Market if it wants to have a real contender on its hands.

Availability and User Interface
Right now, Google Talk with video chat is only available to users running Android 2.3.4. And right now, the only device running Android 2.3.4 is Google's Nexus S. So essentially, if you own an Android device, but it isn't a Nexus S, you're out of luck. Sorry. Google has not made it clear if this latest version of Google Talk will be made available in the Android Market, in which case it would reach a vastly wider audience. Hopefully that will be the case, as it is likely that many Android devices currently in users' hands will never see an update to 2.3.4—or the Google Talk video chat that comes with it.

How Facebook's Dreadfully Executed Smear Campaign Against Google Has Increased Scrutiny Of Facebook's Own Privacy Issues

It appears that Facebook's really weak (and childish) attempt to hire big-time PR firm Burson-Marsteller to run a smear campaign against Google is backfiring in even bigger ways. Beyond just making the company look bad and petty, the whole campaign turns out to have done the exact opposite of its intention. That is, the point of the smear campaign was to call into question Google's treatment of user privacy in its Social Circle feature, allegedly because Facebook was sick of being the focus of everyone's privacy concerns.

Well, consider that plan a huge failure. While most people analyzing Google's privacy setup with Social Circle say that Facebook's concerns are significantly overstated, the whole fiasco has actually resulted in more people questioning Facebook's methods of handling privacy, and they don't look all that good. In fact, Steven Levy points out that the attack on Google is so misguided, because even if Social Circle ended up being a privacy violation, the real problem would have come from Facebook, rather than Google:
But here's what makes the least sense -- if there were privacy problems about Facebook information in Google Social Circle (which has now been transformed into a different product called Social Search), they may well have been a result of Facebook’s own practices.

Facebook was griping that Google is getting information about its users without permission. But some information that users share with Facebook is available publicly, even to people who aren’t their friends in in their social networks – or even are members of Facebook. It’s not because outsiders raided the service and exposed that information. It’s because Facebook chose to expose it.
It appears this strategy is backfiring on multiple levels...

Can Skype Help Microsoft Beat Google? | WebProNews

You’ve probably heard by now that Microsoft is buying Skype (pending regulatory approval). This is Microsoft’s biggest acquisition to date at $8.5 billion, and Skype’s second acquisition (it’s already been bought and sold by eBay). Since Skype’s release from eBay, it has been quite busy adding features and functionalities, and even making some acquisitions of its own, such as that of live streaming video service Qik.

Skype has a reported 663 million registered users and 145 million average connected users. The company recently announced a record of 30 million users online at the same time.

The deal has enormous implications, not only for Microsoft’s own offerings, but for the industry at large. There are also plenty of concerns. Let’s get to those first.

Concerns

Clearly, Skype has a big user base, and users have the right to be worried about what is going to become of their beloved service in the hands of a giant like Microsoft. Especially considering Microsoft’s track record of acquisitions (laid out its graphic nature here).

Marshall Kirkpatrick at ReadWriteWeb brings up some reasonable fears, such as product neglect and malware issues. “Will Skype in 14 years look like Hotmail does today?” he asks. “Malware is already an issue for Skype and of course it’s a well known part of the Microsoft landscape,” he also notes.

How will it affect use across various platforms? Microsoft says it will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms. Still, this is a little vague, and considering how much head butting goes on between Microsoft and Google, it wouldn’t be an enormous shock to see some issues raised in this area in the future.

On reassuring the continued support of other platforms, Steve Ballmer said at the press conference, “I said it and I mean it. We will continue to support non-Microsoft platforms.”

“We’re one of the companies that has a track record of doing this,” he added. Still, does that mean all platforms?

The fact that this is such a huge acquisition for Microsoft, however, should be an indication that the company will take it very seriously, as it has so much invested in Skype’s future success.

Mobile

Skype, which has more users than Twitter, should help Microsoft on numerous strategic levels. Mobile would be a major one. Skype will support Windows Phone, of course, and while it remains to be seen what kinds of integrations we can expect, there’s little doubt that it will be an integral part of the Microsoft mobile strategy as it tries to gain ground against Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS.

Also consider that Microsoft has recently made deals with Nokia and RIM that will see Microsoft services heavily integrated on these companies’ mobile devices. It stands to reason that Skype will play a major role here as well.

It doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility that Microsoft would at some point create a Skype-branded phone.

The Living Room

The living room is one area where Microsoft already has a tremendous edge over competitors like Google and Apple. While the jury’s still out on the future success of Google TV and Apple TV, it’s been pretty well established that Microsoft’s Xbox line is a smashing success. Kinect is doing pretty well too. Guess what will be integrated with both of these.

In its announcement, Microsoft points out its “long-standing focus and investment in real-time communications across its various platforms” including Xbox Live. It also says Skype will support Xbox and Kinect, and will connect Skype users with Xbox Live (in addition to Lync, Outlook and other communities).

PayPal is also coming to Xbox Live. That can’t hurt either.

The Enterprise

Let’s not forget about the implications for businesses. Microsoft says the acquisition will increase accessibility of real-time video and voice communications for enterprise users and generate “new business and revenue opportunities”.

Plenty of businesses are already using Skype. How many are using Microsoft products? This could be a huge blow to Google, who is aggressively going after the enterprise market with Google Apps, and soonwith Chrome OS. Skype may give businesses another reason to stick with MS. Of course it remains to be seen what kinds of integrations we’ll see.

Competition and Google

There are plenty of areas where Microsoft and Google compete with one another, and Skype could go a long way in helping Microsoft with maybe all of them. That includes the areas we’ve already discussed – mobile, the living room, and the enterprise. It also includes the communication services Skype provides on its own.

Google has been doing more and more in this area, whether it be in the form of Google Voice or video chat via Google Talk and Gmail (email being another prime example of where Google and Microsoft already compete). How about live streaming video? Skype recently bought Qik for this, and YouTube recentlyannounced its own YouTube Live (both a viewing destination and a platform for streaming live video).

YouTube is also doing plenty of other things to cement its position of being THE online video destination. This week, the company announced new partnerships with movie studios, the doubling of its catalog of movie offerings (including new releases), and increased investments in original content from partners. This comes back to the living room discussion, but I’m guessing we will continue to see overlap in the offerings from these two companies here.

Bing

And then there’s Bing. What in the world could Skype possibly have to do with search? Well, everything we’ve talked about up until now is all about Microsoft expanding its presence and user base. The more people using Microsoft products (now including Skype), the more opportunities Microsoft has to push Bing on people. The more businesses using Microsoft products, the more opportunities for Bing integration. The more consumers using Microsoft in the living room (where Microsoft is already heavily pushing Bing via television commercials), the more opportunities for Microsoft to push Bing on users through products.

We’ve had the mobile conversation more than once – both when Microsoft announced its partnership with Nokia, and its partnership with RIM. They both equate to Bing search being the default search on more mobile devices, and getting Bing into more consumers’ hands (literally). These things can only help Bing’s continued growth.

Last week, we asked, “Will Bing catch Google?“. The Skype acquisition can’t hurt. Much of this is simply about opportunity. We don’t know all of the details about Microsoft’s plans for Skype, but there’s no question that there is an incredible amount of possibilities that can help give the company some much-needed boosts.

Kirkpatrick brings up another good point about developer opportunities, making the case that “social graph and address books, presence, file sharing, Instant Messaging, [and] mobile” elements of Skype are all things developers salivate over, and that with Microsoft behind it, developers could get a great deal more access to build more useful applications and integrations on top of Skype.

The social element was played up in the press conference about the acquisition.

The Facebook Factor

As long as we’re talking about how much of a strategic buy this could turn out to be for Microsoft, in its ongoing competition with Google, let’s not leave out the implications for Facebook – another company that not only has a partnership with Microsoft, but increasingly competes with Google in numerous areas.

Om Malik brings up some good points about how the acquisition relates to Google’s competition with Facebook, which he says could be the biggest winner of the deal.

“The Palo Alto-based social networking giant had little or no chance of buying Skype. Had it been public, it would have been a different story. With Microsoft, it gets the best of both worlds — it gets access to Skype assets (Microsoft is an investor in Facebook) and it gets to keep Skype away from Google,” he says. “Facebook needs Skype badly. Among other things, it needs to use Skype’s peer-to-peer network to offer video and voice services to the users of Facebook Chat. If the company had to use conventional methods and offer voice and video service to its 600 million plus customers, the cost and overhead of operating the infrastructure would be prohibitive.”

“Facebook can also help Skype get more customers for its SkypeOut service, and it can have folks use Facebook Credits to pay for Skype minutes,” he adds. “Skype and Facebook are working on a joint announcement and you can expect it shortly.”

Also, while Google continues to struggle in social, Skype makes Microsoft more social by default, with or without Facebook (MUCH more so with any Facebook integration).

The New York Times says Microsoft analysts see the acquisition as a move to block Google from “gaining greater ground in Internet communications”. Google was said to have been in talks with Skype about a potential partnership. It may or may not be the entire basis for the acquisition, but it’s not hard to see this logic.

To put it simply, it’s all about products that people use, and Microsoft just added another major one to its list.

Google is just kicking off its Google I/O developer event. It will be interesting to see what all news comes out of this, and how it might pertain to this discussion. Also keep in mind the ongling regulatory scrutinyover competition that Google continues to attract.

The national penchant for watching television every evening before going to sleep, playing video games late into the night or checking emails and text messages before turning off the lights could be interfering with the nation's sleep habits.
"Unfortunately, cell phones and computers, which make our lives more productive and enjoyable, may be abused to the point that they contribute to getting less sleep at night leaving millions of Americans functioning poorly the next day," Russell Rosenberg, the vice chairman of the Washington DC-based National Sleep Foundation (NSF), said in a statement.
Nearly 95 percent of people questioned in an NSF study said they used some type of electronics in the hour before going to bed, and about two-thirds admitted they do not get enough sleep during the week.
Charles Czeisler, of Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said exposure to artificial light before going to bed can increase alertness and suppress the release of melatonin, a sleep-promoting hormone.
"Technology has invaded the bedroom," Czeisler explained in an interview. "Invasion of such alerting technologies into the bedroom may contribute to the high proportion of respondents who reported they routinely get less sleep than they need."
Baby boomers, or people aged 46-64 years old, were the biggest offenders of watching television every night before going to sleep, while more than a third of 13-18 year-olds and 28 percent of young adults 19-29 year olds played video games before bedtime.
Sixty one percent also said they used their computer or laptop at least a few nights each week.
And a propensity to stay in touch means that even people who have managed to fall asleep, are being woken up by cellphones, texts and emails during the night.
"One in 10 kids report they are being awoken by texts after they have gone to bed. People don't turn off their Blackberries," said Czeisler, adding that much of this is happening at the expense of sleep.
Generation Z'ers, 13-18 year olds, were the most sleep-deprived group, with 22 percent describing themselves as "sleepy," compared to only nine percent of baby boomers.
Sleep experts recommend that teenagers get 9 hours and 15 minutes of sleep a night but adolescents in the study were only averaging 7 hours and 26 minutes on weeknights.
"I am the most concerned about how little sleep 13-18 years are getting," said Czeisler. "Kids today are getting an hour and a half to two hours less sleep per night than they did a century ago. That means that they are losing about 50 hours of sleep per month," said Czeisler.
Americans' lack of sleep is negatively impacting their work, mood, family, driving habits, sex lives and health, according to the NSF.
All age groups are coping by consuming caffeinated drinks -- about three 12-ounce (354 ml) beverages per person -- per day, and taking naps, sometimes more than one during the day.
"Parents should get these technologies out of the bedrooms of kids if they want them to do well (in school)," said Czeisler.
